● ►en /e-maks/ n. m. ►APPLI►UNIX Pour Editing MACroS. Éditeur de texte sous Unix, créé et mis au point par Stallman, Richard, et doté d'un puissant langage de macros inspiré de LISP en interne. Voir vi. Emacs a été porté sur pratiquement tous les environnements (Micremacs est la version de Emacs censée fonctionner sur les micros), bien qu'il ait la réputation d'être lourd. Xemacs en est une version alternative. Emacs signifie ainsi pour certains "Escape Meta Alt Control Shift" car il s'appuie sur de nombreux raccourci clavier, ou encore "Eight Megabytes And Constantly Swapping", "Eventually Malloc All Computer Storage" et "Emacs Makes A Computer Slow" (© Jargon File 3.0.0). Web badge d'Emacs, fièrement porté par ce site! À l'origine c'était un acronyme, mais c'est devenu un nom propre, d'où la casse. Les puristes préfèrent l'appeler "emacs" (en minuscules, d'après la commande qu'ils ont l'habitude de taper dans leur shell). Ne pas confondre Emacs et iMac, ou pire, Emacs et eMac!
