Désigne les systèmes permettant de discuter en temps réel avec quelqu'un sur un réseau comme l'Internet (en fait de papoter au sujet de tout et de rien et surtout de n'importe quoi). L'IRC en est un cousin. La différence entre les deux est que l'IRC est un programme particulier, tandis que le chat peut se pratiquer un peu n'importe où, en partic. sur les sites web. On bavarde en général dans des lieux prévus pour cela, i.e. des chat rooms. Bavardage est un syn. peu employé en France de chat. Chat n'a rien à voir avec les félins. Ni rien d'autre, d'ailleurs...
